1944

Jaume Ribas was born in Palou, a small town near Granollers, Catalonia, located on a plain crossed by the Congost River under the vibrant Mediterranean light.

1961

He enters the Salesian novitiate at L’Arboç del Penedès, dedicating himself to both life at the monastery and painting in a studio, where he paints copies of Zurbarán, El Greco and Velázquez. He begins painting landscapes from nature and studies classical philosophy.

1964

In Girona, he paints a mural on the apse of the chapel at the Salesian convent.

1966

Moves to Salamanca, where he begins studying theology at the Universidad Pontificia, completing his studies at the Faculty of Theology Sant Ignasi in Sant Cugat del Vallès. During this time he continues painting independently, obsessed with copying all of Cézanne’s versions of Montagne Sainte-Victoire.

1973-1978

He receives his Licentiate (5-year degree) in Philosophy from the University of Barcelona.

1978-1981

He studies art at the Eina school in Barcelona, where he studies drawing, painting and engraving. There he discovers 20th-century art and a broad range of techniques, media and artistic approaches. Perplexed energy.

1982

Period of experimentation and (dis)orientation. Attracted by Cézanne and Matisse, and later by Mondrian, whose “deductive” painting, with its progressive geometrical simplification, fascinates him.

1984

Begins working on graphic art series. Publishes Expiatòria, his first artist’s book, with poetry by Odile Arqué and a prologue by Albert Ràfols Casamada.

1987-1990

His first period in Berlin. Decides to “be abstract”, as if making Monet and Mondrian compatible. Creates color atmosphere paintings along the lines of “all-over painting” à la De Kooning or Joan Mitchell. Gradually evolves towards the styles of Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler, with more expansive color areas and less brushstroke. Begins exhibiting internationally: Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, etc.

1995-1997

As a result of this evolution, he begins constructions with color strips. Intertwinements and juxtapositions. Continues carrying out a great deal of graphic art, and in 1997, publishes Dèdal, his second artist’s book, with poems by Antoni Clapés.

2000-2003

His works enter the collections of ”la Caixa”, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and the graphic arts sections of the British Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles . In 2003, he contributes the artwork to Les hores de l’or, a book with poetry by Vicenç Altaió, published in a Catalan-German bilingual edition and exhibited at “VisualKultur.cat”, at the Frankfurt Museum für Angewandte Kunst as part of the 2007 Frankfurt Book Fair.

2006

Moves to the town of Foixà, Baix Empordà County, where he begins a process of revision and synthesis that will take him to the simplification of the pictorial surface and the recovery of basic geometrical forms as rhythms, counterpoints, constructions, divisions and signifiers of space, whether in the sense of the sign or that of the symbolic extension of its geometrical message.

2007

Publishes his fourth artist’s book, El primer núvol, with poetry by Josep-Ramon Bach. Miquel Molins presents the book at the artist’s studio in Foixà.

2009

Moves back to Barcelona, where he carries out ideas and projects begun in 2006.

2011

Retrospective at the Centre d’Art Tecla Sala in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, consisting of an overview of his production over the past two decades, with particular emphasis placed on the latest stage.

2016

The main issue of the exhibition in the Museum of Montserrat is to point out the evolution from all-over colour surfaces, marked by crossing lines, that make reference to the limits of the painting and its inner space, towards a more constructive design in black and white.

One of the paintings, “Aura gòtica”, can now be seen in the Museum, having been incorporated to its collection.

2018

The artist paints the apse of the Salesian Church in Sarrià( Barcelona). The idea, which also goes through his whole work, is to be clear, simple and adapt the form to the message that corresponds to the religious aims of the chapel.
